I was wondering how many people around here have heard of kickstarter? It's a site where people can post projects that they need funding for. It recently started having video games show up. A goal is set for the project, and the poster only gets the money if the goal is met. Usually, the poster of the kickstarter offers rewards for backers.

So far, the only game I've kickstarted is Nekro. It looks like it could be a good game, but the deadline is pretty close and they haven't quite reached their goal, if anyone's interested.

Have any of you kickstarted anything?

I have heard of it...i read about it in a game informer issue..seems like a really good idea for gamers to get what they pay for literally.

I have and it's a great website.

Basically, you can pledge to fund games in return for a garunteed version of the game
the more you pledge the better the rewards (£1,000 might involve a trip to the studio for example)

I find kickstarter to be pretty funny, because I think a lot of people believe whatever amount that a game asks for on kickstarter is how much it costs for the game to be made, when the game actually costs much much more than that

Most times yes but the kickstarter is probably also used to increase or to provide more funds for the game studios to finish off the work or provide a bit more before release :)

Kickstarter isn't the first one of its kind, its the most popular with the most backers though due to double fine: This one was there before Kickstarter http://www.indiegogo.com/

And here is the difference between the 2, kickstarter cancels the funding if the projected target is not reached, Indiegogo doesn't, sort of.

Well if that is true I would prefer Kickstarter.

What's the point in donating money if you know or there is a big chance it wont be completed?

Also, I pledged to Grim Dawn on Kickstarter ^_^ I loved Titan Quest

I use Kickstarter all the time, mostly to fund board games. I've spent about $300 on kickstarter in the past 6 months and the projects I backed were worth it.

I have yet to put any money myself into Kickstarter, but I have been watching others fund a few video games. Once they come out we will see how viable it is to fund game development. Haven't looked around the other sections of the site much.

A link for the lazy.

One of the important things about Kickstarter is that they don't take the money out until they have achieved the funding limit and it has passed the time limit.

Yea, I'm sure if I see something I want to invest in I will have no trouble backing it.

Its great, haven't invested any money in it so far but I guess it helps developers who don't want the middle man and deals directly with us consumers however having said that, here is a word of warning to all of you, actually more than a word, here is an article:

It's a great way for small companies to raise the money to fund a game without giving up equity or selling rights in their game to publishers. Basically cuts out the publisher - and I love it. The only flaw with it is it's susceptible to fraud, as evidenced by a couple fake games trying to raise money to steal. None successful so far though (as far as I know).
