Question: Will every match follow a familiar pattern? Will there be different ways for a team to approach a match?

Answer: “So far it doesn’t look like every match will follow a familiar pattern as there are many ways for a team to approach the match. Also, because there will multiple maps there is even more opportunity for variation. Other sources of variation to the initial pattern are the different resource options. The various capture points on the map mean that you aren’t just limited to managing successive waves and jungling. In the Sunken Forest map for example there are multiple “Gold” capture points in the jungle sections to the top and bottom of the two middle lanes. Some teams opt to forgo these nodes in order to exert more control over the lanes and try to push. The other team may decide to let them have it and take all the Gold nodes. From this point the game often diverges towards each side attempting to hold the resourcing option they’ve committed to.

Alternatively, they may end up fighting over all the positions, or any combination inbetween. A lot of the choice on what to do here will depend on the particular Heroes brought into play as certain opening strategies will cater more to the advantages of some Heroes or will exploit disadvantages of opposing Heroes. Just as important will be the particular Realm Powers the Commander has chosen. For example if he is going heavy into Army and Wave based Realm Powers the lane control will likely dominate. Alternatively, if he went heavy into Magic assassin type Realm Powers and Hero hunting strategy may dominate. These are just a few examples, but our hope is that there will be a lot of variation in how teams approach a match.

The beta later this summer will help us make the necessary tweaks to make this as true as possible.”

Good question! Continue the discussion below, how important is match variation to you?

I think it's great that there will be match variation. One of the reasons why I got bored with LoL is that every matched seemed the same, especially at low level play.

I'm happy to hear there will be multiple maps (sounds like more than 2 maybe even?). The variety of different approaches and strats is also really good news as it seems to add a lot more than your typical MOBA approach.

the way that you mention the gold ressource nodes makes it sound like there's more types of nodes than one. Am I correct in thinking that?

I really hope, that this multiple maps concept will work, because for instance HoN has multiple maps, but only 1-2 are currently played. But if there will be enough players capable of playing hero and commander on all those maps, it will be awesome :)
PS: please don´t start arguing which MOBA game is better I know you want to do that B)

I love the idea of multiple maps and multiple approaches, just shows the RTS side of the game even more which I'm excited about! Keep up the amazing work Ironclad we can't wait,

loving what i am reading here, more maps, more options....
to answer: variation is the main reason i am on these forums waiting for a beta! moba's get dull after a while and rts' is a single player thing... combining this should make a great experience/game/time-killer

match variation is very important for me, both as an RTS and DotA player. DotA gives you tons of ways to open up a match(at least in mid-high skilled clanwars) there are options with jungling or even double jungle, pure roaming heroes that stay on level 3 10 minutes into the game but allow for multiple ganks, there are double, tri and even quadro lane options or things like double mid, lvl1 roshan kills, mass push strats, turtle strategies and all of that without even going into specific hero pick strategies

also if you ever plan on having any competitive scene in the game I would say that variety is a requirement , no one will want to watch the same exact matches played over and over again(unless it's LoL, but their userbase is so huge they can afford that)
