So...if you're a LOL player, you should definitely know that Riot has been having issues lately with keeping their servers/game up. That said...I was wondering if any of your SOASE vets out there could shed some light on Ironclad. None of the propaganda...just the truth. Does Ironclad know how to keep their games running 24/7/365.

All online games that require a vast infrastructure of server farms will at some point have hiccups escpecially a game like LOL that has a population density of millions of people trying to spam login at the same time, even Blizzard servers have at times been wanting.

If SOADA takes off with even a 1/2 the population LOL currently has world wide and if SOADA doesn't have appropriate and siffucient server farms or equivalent networking code then SOADA will have the same problems LOL has currently.

Scalability is the keyword here.

Well Sins of a Solar Empire has a relatively small number of players online - Trinity had ~100 tops at the end, Rebellion beta had 100-200 on average, and now that it has released it is between 350-500 people. So, not really the most demanding load to draw an example from. Plus, it's all a moot point. Ironclad isn't handling the MP server side of soada, Infinite Games is. They were chosen specifically because they could handle a game like this where Ironclad could not, so I think we'll be in good hands.

Servers will be servers and part of that is having problems. Large companies as someone listed above, do have problems and downtime. It is just part and parcel of the enviroment

I'm pretty sure the servers for Sins of a Solar Empire are managed by Stardock, the publisher.  On that front, they have the typical RTS server issues, occasional instability for instance.  It's not a problem caused by Ironclad though, just the nature of server operation.

Their networking in the previous offering is outstanding, it performed excellently even on satellite internet, no packet loss problems and smooth operation.  That doesn't necessarily translate to the state of the game server at all though.

Of course Sins will have server problems. It's not realistic to believe otherwise. When League had only 1/100th of it's current population base, they still had days and days of downtime. The problem with scaling the number of servers to correspond with the demand is not an easy thing.

idd if this game hits the fan with players instantly there will be problems, someone mentioned blizzard before, they have been running WoW for a couple of years now, but their sales on diablo 3 went so fast they couldnt cope...

but i believe this game and the ppl behind it know how to work the problem, if the servers cant hold, it means the game is doing good and there will be an answer soon enough because a lot of ppl will want to play.... that is a problem any gamedesigner wants i think.

If the servers are constantly under load and people are unable to log in then:
1. plenty of people playing it and causing log in queues
2. they will be upgraded to cope
3. which means more people will get their friends to join
4. repeat steps 1-3
5. which leads to more profit = more content = more people etc

this game will probably have the same problem as diablo unless they do something about it before launch on release day people will want to try it out (like most patch days in LoL). i hope they will take precauting to prevent this from happening :)

They will take lots of precautions, but murphy's law is always in effect on launch day.  Will probably get a better idea during beta, depending on how many folks they invite.  I remember the LOL beta wasn't that bad until they gave us all a ton of keys for our friends.
