Hello Everyone,
My name is Quinn, I am the Concept Artist here at Ironclad Games. I Joined Ironclad in 2008 to begin concepting and designing assets specifically for Sins of a Dark Age. Most of the artwork on this site was created by myself under the guidance of Creative Director, Craig Fraser, and I am very excited to finally be able to start sharing it with everyone.

Every Wednesday here at Ironclad is game day, that's when we spend a couple of hours playing and testing Sins of a Dark Age. After each game I am constantly blown away by the new additions of both art and programming implemented into the game. It's always really exciting to see a character or creature I've designed come to life.

I look forward to sharing more artwork with everyone here in the coming months.

Quinn

Great to hear from you, Quinn. I am a huge concept art fan, and have used much of it in the past to create forum signatures and website designs. I like what I have seen so far and am very intrigued to see more of your work.

4 years isn't an accurate development time. There's been a lot of other hidden stuff in that timeframe that we couldn't talk about. This is just the first that's been able to be talked about publicly.

Thanks everyone for the comments! It's nice to meet all of you as well.

@Sarudak Hi, Sarudak, just to add to Blair's comment, I've been with Ironclad for just a little over 3 years. I was hired in late October, 2008. I probably should have been more specific in my original post, and while my primary focus has been designing assets for Sins of a Dark Age, I do occasionally work on other unrelated assignments as they come up.

If anyone has any questions related to the art style or concept art for Sins of a Dark Age, I would be happy to answer them.

Cheers,
Quinn

@QuinnSimoes The work you've done (at least as much as can be seen here so far) is really quite breathtaking. I have to say, I'm particularly interested in seeing the AWESOME consept of a Seige Dragon being implemented into this sort of game--he looks like a real pain to take down if you're on defense!

Can I ask--what has been your main inspiration? (Though clearly you want this to be as unique and definitive as a game in this genre can be.) Is there a certain feel you and the rest of the Ironclad team have been going for in the visual design--or anything that you've been trying to avoid?

Or is this all classified until you get a little further along? :)

Great Question Ascanius31!

I usually draw inspiration from real world reference. An example would be the Siege Dragon. For him I looked at various animal reference such as rhinoceros and elephants as well as alligators and bats.

Another one would be the Leaf Scorpion, you can see him on the Game page of this website. Craig brought in a leaf he had found on the way to work and mentioned it looked like a creature the way the sides were rolled.

There has defiantly been a strong visual look for Sins of a Dark Age from the beginning of the design process. Words like medieval, dark and surreal would probably best describe the look we are aiming for.

I wouldn't say there are things we are trying to avoid, rather that there are certain parameters/rules that we try to keep in mind at the concept stage. For example making sure each faction has certain design elements incorporated into them that unify them as a group.

Thanks again for the question,
Quinn

Thanks! Really interesting!  I'm more excited for what might be upcoming having read your reply--it brings an unarguable organic quality to base as much off the real world as possible. Especially something unique like a leaf scorpion. --thanks to Craig for the moment of insight I suppose. :)

I look forward to more of your work being made available for us to see, whether through more art on the site or perhaps some models from the in-game views a little later on.

I can't wait to see some more concept art, it plays such a big part in how a game feels. Loving the colour palette. Super keen! :D
